WildLifeStyle: Backyard Basics

Invite the wild into your life. Everyone needs a home – and that’s especially true for wildlife. Create quality habitat for local critters in your own backyard.

  • Make your backyard wildlife-friendly. If you have a yard or garden, plant native shrubs and perennials that will provide food and shelter for native birds and wildlife (some non-native plants are invasive and harmful to native species). Small mammals, birds and insects often eat berries, seeds and nectars. They also need places where they can raise their young and hide from predators.
  • Know your neighbors. Learn more about the endangered, threatened and at-risk animals that live in your neck of the woods, and find out what you can do to help support their recovery. See how many imperiled species live in your state and how you can help defend them.
  • Be a wild child! It's a wild, wild world. So what are you waiting for? Get outside and explore nature -- and the plants and animals that make it wild. Check out all the wild places and start planning your next Wild Child Adventure...
  • Keep wildlife wild. Wildlife belongs outside. Don't try to keep wild animals as pets. If you find an injured or seemingly abandoned animal, contact your local Humane Society or rehabilitation center to get advice on what to do – and what not to do – to help. Every animal is different – and some can be dangerous – so please approach with care!
