Cat Lazaroff
Director of Communications
Areas of expertise: Media relations
Cat oversees the media staff located in Defenders’ headquarters in Washington, D.C., and is responsible for developing communications campaigns around the work Defenders is accomplishing in all areas, including field outreach, legal, scientific and legislative. Since joining Defenders in May 2007, Cat has worked to expand the Communications Department’s role in advancing our work for wildlife around the nation, ranging from the Mexican wolf to the California condor to the Canada lynx.
Before joining Defenders, Cat worked for four years in the media department at Earthjustice, an environmental law firm and lobbying organization. During that time, she significantly expanded Earthjustice’s media work around the group’s legislative priorities, including safeguarding the Endangered Species Act, tackling air pollution, and protecting roadless areas of our national forests. Prior to her work at Earthjustice, Cat worked as an environmental reporter for publications including the Environment News Service, Audubon magazine and others. She also wrote an educational book titled “Teaching Children About Backyard Birds.”
Cat Lazaroff holds a B.A. from Haverford College and a Masters in Journalism from the Science and Environmental Reporting program at New York University.
