Anne Carlson
Anne with an ostrich chick in the Kalahari DesertAreas of Expertise: wolves, educational outreach programs, media campaigns, conservation programs
Anne is working with a coalition of about a dozen conservation groups dedicated to finding innovative solutions to wolf conservation issues in the Northern Rockies. She will be developing and coordinating educational outreach and media campaigns on wolves in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming in the coming year, with a goal of increasing the social carrying capacity for wolves in these states. The outreach campaign includes work with diverse people, organizations, and groups interested in wolves, as well as the creation of educational brochures and informational websites on wolves.
Before joining Defenders of Wildlife, Anne's scientific and conservation work focused on a variety of mammal species in the wild; including African wild dogs, lions, spotted hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, and 12 species of ungulates in Zambia, meerkats in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa, patas and vervet monkeys in the highlands of Kenya, and Asian elephants in Sri Lanka. Together with her former colleagues in Wisconsin, and at Cambridge University and the San Diego Zoo, she has now published 20 journal articles from these projects. Anne has also taught at the university level, both in Wisconsin and Montana, and has developed educational outreach programs for local schoolchildren in Zambia and California.
Anne received Master’s (1995) and Ph.D. (2000) degrees in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and is a Fulbright Scholar.
