Senior Accountant
Location: Washington, D.C.Supervisor: Vice President of Finance
Position Description
The Senior Accountant performs duties in the areas of grant/contract accounting, budget preparation, and budget variance analysis. The Senior Accountant tracks grant/contract spending, assists in preparation of the budget, and performs budget versus actual variance analysis. The Accountant performs other work, as assignedEssential Duties and Responsibilities
- Interacts with Development and Program staff to ensure that all contracts/grantsGrant activity is properly accounted for and reported
- Maintains a series of contracts/grants-related reports to track the progress of restricted spending
- Researches overspending/underspending of grants; . pPrepares financial reports for grantors as assigned
- Prepares monthly journal entries related to grant spending
- Prepares allocations related to contracts/grants
- Maintains chart of accounts and reporting trees related to contracts/grants
- Participates in grants/contracts budget development
- Assists in the creation of the annual budget, annual revised budget, and regular re-projections
- Creates and distributes monthly budget versus actual reports
- Performs monthly budget vs. actual analysis including researching/investigating variances
- Reconciles various asset, liability, income, and expense accounts on a monthly basis
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's (B.A./B.S.) degree or equivalent in Accounting or related disciplinee
Experience: 3+ years of accounting experience; experience in a non-profit environment preferred
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
Certification/Licensure: CPA preferred
Other Qualifications:
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Ability to learn processes and procedures in a fast-paced working environment
- Strong computing and technology skills, particularly with Microsoft Excel software
- Experience with computerized accounting software; Solomon and FRX preferred
- Ability to be productive in both a team culture and/or independently
- Ability to adapt well in a changing organizational culture
- Able to manage time effectively, produce high-quality work products, and generally interact well with others
